MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams competed at the University of Minnesota’s First Chance Meet on Friday and Saturday and came away with numerous top times among Division III competition.

During Friday night’s session, the Gusties claimed one relay victory and had the fastest times among Division III competitors in 11 of 12 events.

The 400 medley relay team of Peyton Richardson (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill.), Marcus Nguyen (So., Rochester), Jacob Krussell (Sr., Hudson, Wis.), and Joe Ricker (So., Saint Paul) won in 3:42.47. Richardson also took third in the 200 IM at 1:58.42 and fifth in the 100 butterfly at 51.67, both top finishes among Division III swimmers. Kieran Ripken (Jr., Blaine) had the best DIII time in the 100 breaststroke at 58.17, taking third place, and the top DIII time in the 50 free at 21.20, placing second overall. Matt Strom (Jr., Rochester) also had a top DIII time in the 500 free, taking second overall in 4:42.66.

On the women’s side, Ellen Hofstede (Sr., Saint Paul) took second overall in the 100 butterfly at 59.03 and second overall in the 50 free at 24.00, both top times among DIII racers. Lindsay Sundby (Fy., Cannon Falls) finished fourth overall and first among DIII in the 100 breaststoke with a time of 1:09.46. Marit Isaacson (So., Saint Paul) took third in the 200 IM and first in DIII with a time of 2:11.31. The 400 medley relay team of Abby Yartz (Sr., Bemidji), Hannah Ewer (Jr., Hermantown), Mariel Castillo (Jr., Clive, Iowa), and Madeline Ziegler (So., Sauk Rapids) took third overall and first in DIII, touching in 4:13.90.

Saturday morning’s session continued the trend of top DIII times for the Gusties as they did so in five out of eight events.

Jacob Metzger (So., Eagle River, Ark.) won the 1650 free in 17:06.38. Ryan Kawlewski (Sr., Sauk Rapids) had the top DII time in the 400 IM, finishing fourth overall in 4:21.51. Strom took fourth overall and first among DIII in the 100 backstroke with the time of 53.45.

Isaacson took second overall and first in DIII in the 400 IM at 4:42.33. She also took third overall and first in DIII in the 100 backstroke at 59.66.

The final session proved to be more of the same with the Gusties claiming the top DIII times in eight of 10 events.

Andrew Becker (Sr., Northfield) won the 100 free in 47.58. Richardson had the top DIII time in the 200 backstroke, finishing third overall in 1:57.33. And Bradley Chisholm (Fy., Lakeville) took fourth overall and first among DIII in the 200 butterfly at 2:00.01.

Isaacson took second overall and first in DIII in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.48. Isaacson also placed forth overall and first in DIII in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in at 2:33.72. Hofstede had the top DIII time in the 100 free, taking fifth overall in 52.29. Castillo finished fourth overall and first in DIII in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:19.24. The 400 free relay team of Yartz, Ewer, Ameilia Stewart (Sr., International Falls), and Amelia Voss (Jr., Duluth) took second overall and first in DIII in 3:45.57.

DIVING RESULTS

The Gustavus divers took part in the Dodd Road Invite on Saturday.

Kaija Pratt (Jr., Minnetonka) won the women’s 1-meter 11 dives with a score of 432.60. Pratt also won the 3-meter 11 dives with a total of 422.40.

Andrew Jensen (Jr., Wyoming) took third in the men’s 1-meter 11 dives at 440.15.

Gustavus has next week off and then competes at the MIAC Championships on Feb. 15-18.
