SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women’s hockey team will host a mental health awareness game Saturday in its 2 p.m. contest against Bethel. The team is partnering with a non-profit organization, Sophie’s Squad.
Sophie’s Squad is an organization founded in 2021 to improve the mental health of athletes, from youth to college, by raising awareness of mental health issues and removing the stigma associated with seeking mental health resources and help. The organization was created after Sophie Wieland, sister of Gustavus women’s hockey player Rachel Wieland (So., Rice), took her own life at the age of 14.
“For me, and I’m sure the rest of the team, this game is very special and important,” said Gustavus junior Brooke Power (Lakeville). “Mental health needs to be taken seriously and the stigma behind it of seeking help needs to be removed. This game is a good step in that direction. This organization started from someone personal to us and having a game to help honor it is very special to all of us.”
Earlier in the year, in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Gustavus women’s hockey team took part in a 5k run/walk in support of mental health awareness. The event was sponsored by Sophie’s Squad and featured guest speaker Mark Wick, a men’s hockey coach and mental health speaker. Wick has served as a coach of fellow MIAC men’s hockey programs St. Scholastica and Augsburg, and began his own collegiate career playing two years at Gustavus from 1981-83.
Saturday’s game will be just one of many Sophie’s Squad events that will be hosted throughout the year. The teams have asked for fans to wear teal to the game, which will also feature a ceremonial puck drop, chuck-a-puck between periods, and merchandise available to purchase.
