DULUTH, Minn. — Saturday’s game against St. Scholastica had a very different feeling for the Gusties, who erupted for nine goals in the first game of the series just a few days earlier. The Gusties managed just three goals on 48 shots in their Saturday night 3-1 win, thanks to the efforts of Scholastica net-minder Ashlea Arvidson.

The first 20 minutes came to a close in Duluth, and this time, the scoreboard read 0-0 rather than 4-0 like it previously had on Thursday night. The Gusties were unable to put one past Arvidson, who made 18 saves for St. Scholastica in the opening period.

The second period started to look more familiar for the Gusties, thanks to Hailey Holland (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.) who found the back of the net four minutes into the second to give Gustavus a 1-0 lead. St. Scholastica responded just two minutes later to even the score at one, but a tally from Molly McHugh (Sr., Minnetonka) and a shorthanded goal from Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove) would give the Gusties the 3-1 lead heading into the locker room after the second.

Neither team managed a goal in the third period, as both Arvidson and Katie McCoy (Sr., Grafton, Wis.) would finish with a perfect final period. McCoy finished with 17 saves in net for the Gusties, including nine in the third period. McCoy’s 17 saves are a season-high this year. Her counterpart Arvidson was crucial in holding back the Gustie offense, making a total of 45 saves in the game, including 22 in the second period.

The Gusties, now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, return for a quick turnaround on Tuesday night when they host UW-Superior for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. in Saint Peter.
