SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team earned its 11th consecutive MIAC playoff championship and will move on to the national tournament for the 34th time in program history after a 5-0 win over Carleton. With the win, the Gusties improve to 24-10.

“The guys played a fantastic match today,” said Head Coach Tommy Valentini. “We faced a very strong opponent and we came out with great energy and execution in the doubles. Our experienced guys were great from the start today and our guys who were in the playoffs in new roles for the first time handled the moment beautifully.”

Drew Elofson (Sr., Saint Peter) and Marco Siviero (Fy., Sao Miguel de Oeste, Brazil) started things out for the Gusties with a decisive 8-2 win. Daniel Fouchier (Nootdorp, Netherlands) and Sourabh Terakanambi (Jr., Apple Valley) continued the Gustavus rally with an 8-3 victory before  Nick Aney (Sr., Rochester) and Alex Budde (Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis.) battled to an 8-4 win to sweep doubles.

“We got a great start from Drew and Marco at 3, and Sourabh and Daniel competed very well for us at 2. Nick and Alex stayed calm early and let their game come through in the back end of their match to get us to 3-0. From there we stayed present and played some solid singles.”

Aney played a dominant 6-0, 6-0 singles match against his Knights opponent before Budde shut the door on the MIAC Championship title with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

“Nick brilliantly executed his game plan to get the 4th point, and Alex hit some great shots to close it out for us. But really today was a great team effort for us. Everyone in our program played their role at a very high level. Like we have all year, we had important contributions and leaderships from so many of the guys.”
