Women’s Hoops Claims New Year’s Day Win Over UW-Stout Posted on January 1st, 2022 by

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s basketball team kicked off 2022 with a 69-53 win over UW-Stout on Saturday. The Gusties used a 29-point second quarter to gain a comfortable lead and held on for the remainder of the game, improving to 7-2 on the season.

Grace Benz (Sr., Steele, N.D.) had a career game, shooting 9-of-10 from the field for a game-high 19 points. Benz also led the team with eight rebounds, four steals, and added a block. Syd Hauger (So., Springfield) contributed 17 points off the bench on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Gusties shot 54.9 percent and held the Blue Devils to 38 percent.

UW-Stout held an early lead before the Gusties closed out the first quarter on a 9-2 run for a 15-10 advantage. The second quarter swayed all the momentum in favor of Gustavus as it outscored the Blue Devils 29-15 during the frame. The Gusties made 12-of-14 shots in the quarter, highlighted by Hauger dropping 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting, including a pair of threes. The Gusties led 44-25 at half.

UW-Stout outscored the Gusties 19-13 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 57-44, but the Gusties limited the visitors to nine points in the fourth to secure the win.

Gustavus scored 28 points off turnovers and had 12 steals.

Gustavus returns to conference play Wednesday when its hosts Saint Mary’s at 7 p.m.
