RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team looked to respond Saturday night at UW-River Falls in a non-conference matchup. The Gusties played the 12th ranked Falcons extremely tough but unfortunately came up just short in a 3-1 loss, setting the Gusties back 2-4 on the season.
Despite the Gusties coming out with an advantage on shots 6-5, the Falcons found the back of the net at the 11:24 mark and to take an early lead.
The second period proved to be full of grit and physical play with seven penalties shared between the teams. Both squads failed to convert on abbreviated 5 on 3 power plays throughout the middle frame. With eight minutes left in the second period, the Gusties got on the scoreboard from a Jack Westlund (Fy., Alexandria) rebound goal, with Connor Clemons (Sr., Savage) and Nick Klishko (Sr., San Diego) being credited with the assists. Both netminders ended the second period making 16 saves on 17 shots.
The deadlock remained until the Falcons made a game-winning wrap around goal nine minutes into the third period. With an attempt to even the contest, the Gusties opted for an extra skater and the Falcons made a final empty net goal.
Despite his 27 saves on 29 shots, Grant Boldt recorded his second loss of the season.
Gustavus will look to rally back next weekend, opening conference play on their home ice against Bethel as they host the annual teddy bear toss game at 7:00.
