MORRIS, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team opened its season on the road against Minnesota-Morris with a 4-1 win.

“Tonight was a great team performance,” said Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie “This season so all about the collective team effort in every aspect and we lived up to that in tonights game. At times our ball movement and creativity were inspiring and it showed with putting four beautiful goals away. We were unlucky to not score a few others, but overall incredibly proud of everyone’s performance. “

Page Cocchiarella (Sr., Owatonna) got on the board just two minutes into the game on a penalty kick for the Gusties to take a lead. Ten minutes later Taylor Hemme (Sr., Eden Prairie) found Jordan Whalen (So., Owatonna) in the front of the net for an assist to tally on a second goal. Gustavus held onto the lead before the Cougars responded with ten minutes left in the first half to score on a penalty shot before closing the first frame with the Gusties ahead 2-1.

Molly Waters (So., Lakeville) was quick to retaliate, 49 seconds into the second half with Cocchiarella getting her second assist of the night. Whalen kept the momentum going recording her second goal of the game finding the top corner of the net with Waters being credited with the assist for the 4-1 win.

Leah Pavlish (Jr., Prior Lake) started the first half for the Gusties in net with one goal and one save, Abby Goodno (Jr., Little Canada) finished the second frame scoreless.

“A huge shout out to Morris who challenged us throughout the game to find different ways to attack and put our defense under pressure at times. We are so appreciative of them hosting us for this rescheduled game as we are not taking any opportunity to compete for granted.”
