MORRIS, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team opened its season on the road against Minnesota-Morris with a 4-1 win.
Page Cocchiarella (Sr., Owatonna) got on the board just two minutes into the game on a penalty kick for the Gusties to take a lead. Ten minutes later Taylor Hemme (Sr., Eden Prairie) found Jordan Whalen (So., Owatonna) in the front of the net for an assist to tally on a second goal. Gustavus held onto the lead before the Cougars responded with ten minutes left in the first half to score on a penalty shot before closing the first frame with the Gusties ahead 2-1.
Molly Waters (So., Lakeville) was quick to retaliate, 49 seconds into the second half with Cocchiarella getting her second assist of the night. Whalen kept the momentum going recording her second goal of the game finding the top corner of the net with Waters being credited with the assist for the 4-1 win.
Leah Pavlish (Jr., Prior Lake) started the first half for the Gusties in net with one goal and one save, Abby Goodno (Jr., Little Canada) finished the second frame scoreless.
