SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s basketball team had a knockout performance winning 74-42 over Concordia.
Caitlin Rorman (So., Blue Earth) got on the board right away with a two-pointer to initiate and carry a lead well into the first quarter. Ava Gonsorowski (Sr., Esko) solidified the offense scoring seven points to close out the first quarter for the Gusties to lead 20-12.
Gustavus kept the momentum going on defense as well with six steals and eight rebounds on top of 16 points to finish 36-20 at halftime.
The Gusties didn’t let off the gas in the third quarter, tallying 11 rebounds and 10 bench points. Marisa Gustafson (Sr., Mahtomedi) individually tacked on 11 points for Gustavus to take a powerhouse 32 point lead.
The Cobbers stepped up defensively to put up 12 rebounds and 19 points to cut the deficit but Gustavus was locked down to take the 74-42 win. Betsy Schoenrock (Jr., New Richland) led the team with a career high 13 points followed by Paige Richert (Sr., Comfrey) with 10 steals. Maddy Rice (So., Forest Lake) also put up four steals against the Cobbers.
“Defensively a really good outing for us, holding them to 42 points,” said Head Coach Laurie Kelly. “A strong team effort, we had good transitions and pushed tempo. Our depth has been our greatest strength and having fresh players coming out of the game over a long period of time. Concordia is a team that plays hard every possession regardless of the score and they have a reputation to put on defensive pressure. As a team we’re gonna work on our decision making on passing but we’re playing really well right now overall.”
