SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s and men’s indoor track & field teams are set to compete at the Donald McNeely Spectrum at Saint John’s University for a tri-meet against the Johnnies, Saint Ben’s, and Augsburg. The Gusties are coming off a record-breaking performances last week at Bethel. Taylor Rooney (Sr., Andover) set two school records, first, in the 60m hurdles with a 7.87 time, and second in the high jump with a leap of 6-9. The marks put him as the fifth fastest performance in Division III history for hurdles and to lead the nation in Division III in both events. He also won the 200-meter in 22.69, which ranks first in the MIAC and 12th in Division III. Rooney received both MIAC Athlete of the Week and USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors.
Also coming off of a standout performance is Birgen Nelson (So., Edina). Nelson placed first in the 60m hurdles with an 8.93 finish in the preliminary round and a second place finish in the final round (8.97) to be ranked second in Division III. Nelson also finished first in the 200m later in the day at 26.32.
The Gustavus men’s track team is coming off of a win, and the women’s team is coming off of a loss against Bethel. Saint John’s is coming off of a win over Hamline and Southwest Minnesota State, and where Saint Benedict’s placed second.
The first heat of the day begins at 11:40 a.m. with the men’s 60m and concludes with the women’s 4×200 at 5:35 p.m.
