MOORHEAD, Minn. – No. 6 Gustavus women’s hockey got back to its winning ways Friday night with a 4-0 victory at Concordia. The Gusties improve to 14-3-2 overall and 10-1-2 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers are 6-14-0 overall and 4-9-0 in the conference.
“We didn’t play our best, it was just one of those games,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said. “I don’t know if it was having the week off of school, but we had to work through it. We finished strong so that was nice to see. Hopefully we can start a little quicker tomorrow.”
Molly McHugh (Fy., Minnetonka) scored what proved to be the game winner halfway through the first period, assisted by Kristina Press (So., Cottage Grove), and the Gusties held a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
Just over a minute into the second period, Alaina Halverson (Fy., Rochester) scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Stephanie Anderson (So., Blaine) and Lindsey Bjerke (Fy., New Prague).
Seven minutes into the third, Jordyn Peterson (So., Brookings, S.D.) made it a 3-0 lead with the help of Madigan Goldsworthy (So., Chaska). And Hailey Holland (Fy., Aberdeen, S.D.) capped the scoring with a power play goal with 3:11 left in the game, her ninth goal of the season, assisted by Kristen Cash (So., Roseville) and Press.
The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 46-11. The visitors went 1-for-5 on the power play and killed off both Cobber skater advantages.
Emilia Helms-Leslie (So., Fairbanks, Alaska) earned the win after making 11 saves.
The two teams complete the series at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Moorhead.
