Women’s Basketball Travels to No. 6 St. Thomas Saturday

The Gustavus women’s basketball team will travel to St. Paul Saturday for a 3 p.m. MIAC matchup with No. 7 St. Thomas. The Gusties enter the contest 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference while the Tommies are 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC.

Gustavus Game Notes

The Series: Saturday’s contest marks the 86th all-time meeting between the two teams with St. Thomas currently holding a 62-23 edge. The Tommies have won 23 straight matchups, with Gustavus’s most recent win coming on Feb. 17, 2010 when they defeated St. Thomas 66-56.

Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus is most recently coming off a 76-57 win over Hamline on Wednesday. Through six contests the Gusties are second in the MIAC in scoring at 74.8 points per contest, while their 49.5 points allowed ranks first in the league. Caitlin Rorman (Fy., Blue Earth) and Ava Gonsorowski (Jr., Esko) have been the two top scorers for the Black and Gold, averaging 15.5 and 13.7 points, respectively, with Rorman averaging a team-best 7.7 rebounds while Gonsorowski has a team-high 3.8 assists. Paige Richert (Jr., Comfrey) and Marisa Gustafson (Jr., Mahtomedi) have also been strong with Richert scoring 9.2 points per contest on 54.5 percent shooting while Gustafson averages 9.0 points and leads the team with eight three pointers.

Scouting the Tommies: St. Thomas is most recently coming off a 74-53 win over Macalester Wednesday. The Tommies have been the most efficient team from the field in the MIAC through six games, shooting a league best 49.3 percent from the field and 45.0 percent from three point range. Macy Hatlestad, Brynne Rolland, and Amber Darge all average double figures for the Tommies with 15.0, 14.0, and 10.8 points per game, respectively. Hatlestad has been lights out from behind the arc this season, making 20-of-33 (60.6 percent) attempts this season, while also leading the team with 3.3 assists per contest.
