STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Gustavus men’s soccer team traveled to Storm Lake, Iowa Monday night and took down Buena Vista 3-0. With the win the Gusties move to 8-2 overall while the Beavers drop to 1-8-3.
The Gusties got the scoring started just over five minutes into the game when, following a corner, Scott Heinen (Jr., Aurora, Ill.) was able to get a loose ball and knock it in for the score. The Gusties kept the scoring rolling early in the half when at the 25-minute mark Palden Choesang (Fy., New Brighton) extended the Gustie lead to two when he got a shot from the right side of the box that he put in for the score.
The rest of the first half played scoreless but in half number two the Gusties got on the board quickly again when Will Richards (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) put Gustavus up three 12 minutes into the half with a header off a cross from Matt Gibbons (Jr., Minneapolis). Neither team would score the rest of the contest as the Gusties were able to post a shutout. Wesley Sanders (Fy., Urbandale, Iowa) and John Toppin (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) played in net with Sanders getting the win and making one save in the contest.
Gustavus outshot Buena Vista in the contest 24-1 and had 11 corners to three from the Beavers.
The Gusties are next in action Wednesday when they host St. Olaf at 4 p.m.
