SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday at St. Thomas. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul. The Gusties enter the contest 4-1 overall while the Tommies are 1-2-3.
The Series: Today’s game marks the 65th all-time meeting between Gustavus and St. Thomas on the soccer pitch with the Gusties leading the series 27-25-12. Last season the two teams tied 1-1 in double overtime on Sept. 22.
Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus enters the contest most recently falling to Central 4-3 Sunday. Through five games the Gusties have a trio of players tied for second in the nation averaging 3.4 points per game. Cole Schwartz (7g, 3a), Matthew Gibbons (5g, 7a), and Raphael Cattelin (5g, 7a) have all accumulated 17 points to lead the Black and Gold. Wesley Sanders has played every minute in net for the Gusties this season, holding a 4-1 record, making 11 saves and allowing five goals for a save percentage of .688.
Scouting the Tommies: St. Thomas enters the contest most recently coming off a 0-0 2OT tie versus the University of Redlands Sunday. Through six contests the Tommies are led offensively by Halvor Houg who has two goals, while George Marty, Sean Kurtenbach, and Isaac Eckroth have each scored once. Sean Teske played the first five contests in net for St. Thomas, allowing six goals and making 15 saves, while Troy Louwagie played the duration of the 0-0 tie with Redlands, making six saves.
