Women’s Soccer Opens MIAC Play Tuesday at St. Thomas Posted on September 17th, 2019 by

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Tuesday at St. Thomas. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in St. Paul. The Gusties enter the contest 0-4 overall while the No. 9 nationally ranked Tommies are 3-0.

The Series: Today’s game marks the 41st all-time meeting between Gustavus and St. Thomas on the soccer pitch with the Tommies leading the series 23-15-2. Last season the Tommies edged the Gusties 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 22. Abby Mullenbach (Sr., Lakeville) scored the lone goal for the Black and Gold in the 36th minute, but the Tommies answered in the 60th and 91st minutes.

Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus most recently lost 4-0 at Wartburg on Saturday. Through four games Katie Ashpole (Jr., Chaska) leads the offense with three points on a goal and an assist. Mullenbach has the team’s other goal. Ashley Becker (Sr., Farmington) has started all four games in goal with a 2.63 goals against average and a .722 save percentage.

Scouting the Tommies: St. Thomas, ranked No. 9 in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll, most recently defeated Fontbonne (Mo.) 1-0 on Sept. 8. Through three games, Callie Haertle leads the offense with three goals. Paige Carter is next with one goal and two assists for four points. Olivia Elvidge has started two games in goal with a 0.50 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
