SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team hosts Luther for its home opener at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Gusties enter the contest 0-2 overall while the Norse are 0-2 as well.
The Series: Saturday’s contest marks the 19th all-time meeting between the Gusties and Norse with Gustavus leading the series 11-3-4. Luther won the most recent matchup 2-1 on Sept. 6, 2015.
Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus last weekend was shut out 1-0 at Carthage followed by a 3-1 loss at Loras. The Gusties were outshot 19-7 at Carthage and 34-13 at Loras. Abby Mullenbach (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored the lone goal of the season with an assist by Katie Ashpole (Jr., Chaska, Minn.). Ashley Becker (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) has played all 180 minutes in net with 16 saves and a 2.00 goals against average. Becker became the second Gustavus women’s soccer keeper in program history to reach the 300-save mark and is currently eight shy of breaking Tara Joosten’s record set in 1997.
Scouting the Norse: Luther lost a pair of 4-0 decisions to Virginia Wesleyan and Christopher Newport last weekend in Norfolk, Va. The Norse have been outshot 30-4 in two games. Kennedy Bergren has played every minute in goal with 12 saves and a 4.00 goals against average.
