Date and Location Change: Baseball to Host Macalester on Sunday

The Gustavus vs. Macalester baseball doubleheader originally scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Macalester has been moved to 1 p.m. Sunday at Gustavus. Macalester’s natural grass field is not yet suitable for play, prompting the location change. The Gusties enter the MIAC-opening doubleheader 8-4 overall while the Scots are 6-5. 

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus vs. Macalester baseball doubleheader originally scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Macalester has been moved to 1 p.m. Sunday at Gustavus. Macalester’s natural grass field is not yet suitable for play, prompting the location change. Macalester will still be designated as the home team in both games. The Gusties enter the MIAC-opening doubleheader 8-4 overall while the Scots are 6-5.

THE SERIES

Sunday’s games mark the 144th and 145th meetings between Gustavus and Macalester on the diamond with the Gusties owning a 98-44-1 advantage in the all-time series. Last season the Scots swept the Gusties 5-0 and 10-3 on April 29 in Saint Peter. Macalester has won the last seven games with Gustavus’s last victory coming on April 25, 2015.

SCOUTING THE GUSTIES

Gustavus is coming off a series split against Wartburg on Tuesday, winning game one 4-3 before a 10-4 loss in the night cap, snapping a six-game winning streak. After 12 games this season, Cole Pengilly (So., Le Sueur, Minn.) leads the offense with a .457 average (16-35). Among regular starters, Matt Berkner (Sr., Sleepy Eye, Minn.) is next with a .333 average (12-36). Sam Archer (Sr., Zimmerman, Minn.) leads the team with 12 RBI and 21 total bases. Adam Stockwell (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) is slated to start game one on the mound. Stockwell is 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA in 16 innings and leads the team with 22 strikeouts. Christian Johnson (So., Buffalo, Minn.) will start game two and holds a 1-1 record with a 6.94 ERA in 11.2 innings and has 16 strikeouts. Macalester started its season 5-5 at the Tucson Invitational and most recently beat Northwestern-St. Paul 10-7 on Wednesday in a single nine-inning game. Graham Low leads the offense with a .500 average (19-38), including five doubles, a triple, and nine RBI. Sam Goldberg is next with a .333 average (9-27) and nine RBI as well. Thomas Shogren leads the pitching staff with 12 innings on the mound. He holds a 0-1 record and a 6.75 ERA. Will Madairy is next with 10 innings pitched, a 1-0 record, and 2.70 ERA. He also leads the team with 13 strikeouts. Zach Anderson has made a team-leading four pitching appearances with a 9.64 ERA in 4.2 innings.
