SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team heads to Winona, Minn. on Saturday to take on Saint Mary’s in a 3 p.m. contest. The Gusties enter the contest 8-10 overall and 5-8 in MIAC while the Cardinals are 6-12 overall with a 2-11 conference mark.

The Series

Saturday’s contest marks the 177th all time meeting between the two teams with the Gusties holding a 125-51 edge. The last time the two teams met, on Dec. 12, 2018, the Cardinals took home an 86-81 victory.

Scouting the Gusties 

Gustavus enters Saturday’s contest winners of three of their last four, most recently defeating St. Olaf 82-70 on Wednesday. Spencer Tollefson, who leads the Gusties with 2.5 assists per contest had a team-high 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting including 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the contest. Riley Sharbono has been in double-figures in the last four contests for the Black and Gold and he leads the team with 13.5 points per contest. As a team Gustavus is fourth in the MIAC in both field goal percentage (46.4) and three-point percentage (37.7).

Scouting the Cardinals

Saint Mary’s comes into the contest looking to a snap an eight game losing skid most recently falling to Saint John’s 89-58 on Wednesday. Eli Cave is the only Cardinal averaging double figures on the season as he pours in 18.1 points per contest to go along with 6.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Saint Mary’s ranks sixth in the MIAC in both steals and blocks with 5.8 and 2.4 respectively. They are also fourth best in the league in opponent three point percentage holding teams to just a 34.4 clip.
