ROCHESTER, Minn. – A pair of Gusties were honored Monday night in their hometown of Rochester, Minn. for their athletic achievements after high school. Chris Captain ’18 and Nora Holtan ’19 were named Male and Female Post High School Athletes of the Year at Minnesota’s Rochester Sports Banquet, which celebrates southeast Minnesota’s 2018 top amateur athletes.

Captain ended his decorated golf career as a four-time All-Conference performer, becoming the first Gustavus men’s golfer to achieve that feat since 2004. Captain is also a two-time All-America Scholar. He played 19 rounds his senior season with a 75.9-stroke average, which ranked 16th in the league. The Rochester native finished top-10 four times in 2018 with his best performace at the MIAC Championship where he took fourth place.

Holtan completed her volleyball career at Gustavus as a three-time AVCA First Team All-American, three-time MIAC Player of the Year, and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. She is the program’s all-time leader in assists with 4,528 in four seasons. Holtan is the only player in Gustavus history with at least 4,000 assists, 1,000 digs, and 500 kills. During her senior season, Nora averaged 10.16 assists and 2.5 digs, playing a large part in the Gusties’ 27-3 record. The team advanced to the NCAA tournament all four seasons she was on the squad.

“We’re thrilled Chris and Nora have been honored with this award,” Gustavus Athletics Director Tom Brown said. “They exemplify what it means to be a Division III student-athlete and represent Gustavus so well. We look forward to welcome more exceptional students from southeast Minnesota.”
