MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team suffered a 4-2 loss at No. 4-ranked Augsburg on Friday night. The Auggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and the Gusties were unable to dig out of the hole, dropping to 5-12-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the MIAC.
Augsburg scored even strength goals at the 4:50 and 16:35 marks of the first period, and added a power play goal with 1:17 left in the frame to carry a 3-0 lead into the second. The Gusties ended the shutout at the 10:32 mark of the second as Toby Sengvongxay (Fy., Luverne, Minn.) scored his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Evan Erickson (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.), and the score read 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
The Auggies tallied their fourth and final goal of the night 12 minutes into the third frame. Gustavus responded 2:34 later as Tyler Rock (So., Savage, Minn.) netted his third goal of the season, assisted by Sengvongxay, but could not complete the comeback.
Gustavus outshot Augsburg each period for a total of 37-26. Chris Amsden (Sr., Saint Peter, Minn.) made 22 saves in net. The Gusties went 0-6 on the power play and killed off 3-of-4 penalties.
Game two of the series is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
