Men’s Basketball Hosts Cobbers in MIAC Play Saturday Posted on January 18th, 2019 by

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team will take on the Concordia College on Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court in Saint Peter, Minn at 3 p.m. The Gusties enter the contest 6-9 overall and 3-7 in MIAC play, while the Cobbers are 5-10 overall and 4-6 in MIAC play.

The Series

Saturday’s contest marks the 183rd all-time meeting between the Golden Gusties and the Cobbers with Gustavus currently holding a 116-66 advantage. The last time the two teams met, on Feb. 5, 2018, a Riley Sharbono buzzer-beater gave the Gusties a 69-67 victory.

Scouting the Gusties

Gustavus is most recently coming off a 81-75 victory over Macalester on Wednesday. The Gusties have been shooting three pointers exceptionally well of late, making at least eight three pointers and shooting at least 40 percent from behind the arc in their last four contests. They are led offensively this season by Sharbono who is averaging 13.4 points per contest. First year Nolan Malo has also been solid averaging 9.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest. As a team the Gusties rank fourth in both field goal and three points percentage in the MIAC.

Scouting the Cobbers

Concordia is coming off a 67-60 victory over Saint Mary’s on Wednesday. After winning just one game prior to the New Year, the Cobbers have rattled off four victories in their last six contests, and over that six game stretch they have allowed more than 65 points just one time.  They have a quartet of players averaging double figures this season with Jordan Davis leading the way with 12.6. Davis also leads the team averaging 6.3 rebounds per contest. As a team the Cobbers rank fourth in the league in rebound margin and second in blocks per game.
