WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 10 Gustavus volleyball team won its eighth consecutive match Friday night at the UW-Whitewater Dig Panici Classic with a four-set victory over UW-Stevens Point. The Gusties won by set scores of 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, and 25-23 to improve to 16-2 overall.

“Their offense is very powerful and they are a balanced team,” Head Coach Rachelle Sherden said of the Pointers. “The defense from both teams was really scrappy and gritty and it was fun to watch them rally.”

Lauren Hanson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) was efficient on the attack, posting 14 kills and a .324 hitting percentage. Kaikea Welsch (Fy., Kansas City, Mo.) tied her season high with 10 kills along with a .308 hitting clip. Sam Haugen (Sr., Becker, Minn.) recorded a season-high nine kills with an impressive .421 attack percentage.

Kate Holtan (So., Rochester, Minn.) tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs. Nora Holtan (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) distributed 44 assists to go with eight kills and six digs. Brittany Luethmers (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) led the defense with 16 digs.

The Gusties have two matches tomorrow – 10 a.m. against UW-La Crosse and noon against UW-Whitewater.

“Tomorrow we need energy and communication from the start and continue to play our game,” Sherden said. “Bringing out a gritty mindset from the get-go to compete against two tough opponents back to back.”
