MANKATO, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s track & field team had a strong showing at the Minnesota State University Twilight meet on Friday, headlined by McKayla Stowell (Jr., Le Sueur, Minn.) and Katie Keelin’s (So., Burnsville, Minn.) performances.
Stowell continued to lead the way for the Gustie sprinters, setting personal best times in each the 100 and 200-meter dashes. She finished second in the 100 at 12.15 and finished in 25.34 in the 200, also good for a runner-up time.
Keelin set a big PR in the hammer throw, finishing first with a 163 foot, eight inch throw. Her previous outdoor best was a throw of 160 feet at last year’s MSU Twilight. Bailey Van Den Heuvel (Jr., Mondovi, Wis.) also had a personal best hammer throw of 151-11, which was good for fourth place.
Another pair of Gustie throwers also had a solid day. Marisa Morgan (Sr., Rockford, Ill.) was the runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 121-05, and Bella Klabough (Fy., Klabough, Minn.) led the Gusties in the discus throw with a PR of 130-5.
“Today was a good meet for us all the way around,” said Head Coach Dale Bahr. “The throwers stepped up and hit some big PR’s. We saw lots of good performances and that is what were looking for heading into conference.”
In the 1,500-meter run, Tierney Winter (So., Waterville, Minn.) and Lydia Hayes (Sr., Decorah, Iowa) finished second and third at 4:57.32 and 4:58.25, respectively.
A pack of Gusties also finished second through seventh in the 5,000-meter run. Megan Weaver (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) led the way at 19:30.03, with Olivia Rosenow (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) right behind her at 19:30.06.
In addition, Taylor Thompson (Fy., Millville, Minn.) and Rachel Studer (Fy., Maple Grove, Minn.) finished 12th and 13th at the MIAC Heptathlon in Northfield. Studer scored 2,989 points while Studer tallied 2,935.
“We are looking forward to next week. It has kind of been a tough season and it’s fun to get some good weather and now we will see how will stack up against the rest of the conference next week,” Bahr commented.
Next up, Gustavus prepares to compete in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships next weekend in Northfield, Minn.
