Gustavus Set To Host ITA Division III National Men’s Team Indoor Championships Posted on February 21st, 2018 by

ST. PETER, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus College is set to host the 18th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Division III Indoor Championships Feb. 23-25 at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minnesota. Eight of the top 16 teams in NCAA Division III men’s tennis will square off to determine the 2018 ITA National Indoor Champion.

Emory University of Atlanta, Georgia (No. 1 in most recent ITA Division III poll) looks to defend its 2017 National Indoor Championship this year as the No. 1 seed entering the tournament. The Eagles have won the title the past two years and are striving for a record third straight ITA Indoor crown.

Joining Emory in this year’s field are:

  • No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps of Claremont, Calif.
  • No. 6 Washington University of St. Louis, Mo.
  • No. 9 University of Chicago
  • No. 10 Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh, Pa.
  • No. 11 University of Redlands of Redlands, Calif.
  • No. 13 Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas
  • No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus College of St. Peter, Minn.

The tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday with the No. 3 seed Washington University Bears taking on the No. 6 seed Redlands Bulldogs. The No. 2 seed CMS Stags take on the No. 7 seed Trinity Tigers at noon, followed by the No. 4 seed Chicago Maroons versus the No. 5 seed Carnegie Mellon Tartans at 3:30 p.m. The final match of the day featuring the No. 1 seed Emory Eagles against the No. 8 seed Gustavus Golden Gusties starts at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule has the winners of the quarterfinal round facing each other at 8:30 a.m. and noon, while the losers of the quarterfinals will begin consolation play at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday features the national championship match at 8 a.m. followed by the consolation championship, third-, and seventh-place matches.

Many of the top players in NCAA Division III will take part in this year’s tournament, including four of the top 10 ranked singles competitors. Top-ranked players in singles include Mohanad Alhouni (No. 1) of Gustavus, Jonathan Jemison (No. 4) of Emory, Chase Lipscomb (No. 5) of Redlands, and Jeremy Yuan (No. 6) of Chicago.

In the doubles field, four of the top 10 tandems will compete. Top doubles teams include Tyler Raclin and Yuan (No. 1) of Chicago, Adrian Bouchet and Will Wanner (No. 5) of Emory, Alhouni and Patrick Whaling (No. 6) of Gustavus, and Jake Berner and Nikolai Parodi (No. 8) of CMS.
