Gymnastics Drops WIAC Home Dual Meet To UW-Oshkosh

The Gustavus gymnastics team lost a home Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Sponberg Gymnastics Studio, falling 183.425-179.875 to UW-Oshkosh. The Gusties’ best event was the vault were they scored a season-high 46.575. They also tallied 45.675 on the floor, 44.000 on the bars, and 43.625 on the beam.

PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus gymnastics team lost a home Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Sponberg Gymnastics Studio, falling 183.425-179.875 to UW-Oshkosh. The Gusties’ best event was the vault were they scored a season-high 46.575. They also tallied 45.675 on the floor, 44.000 on the bars, and 43.625 on the beam.

“Today we performed the way we have the past few meets,” Head Coach Aryn DeGrood said. “There were bright spots throughout the day but also things that need to be improved upon. We have to have less falls if we expect to be reach our goals and break the 180 mark. We are hoping to make important adjustments this week and have momentum going into our meet in Baltimore next Sunday.“

Leah Heilig (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) and Amanda Malo (Jr., Greenwood, Minn.) both earned second place finishes – Heilig on the vault with a 9.4 to tie a season-high and Malo on both the floor (9.4) and vault (9.4 – season-high). Heilig also took third on the floor, scoring a season-best 9.325. Malo finished with a 36.15 in the all-around to take third place.

Veronica Vasina (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) led the Gusties on the bars with a score of 9.0 for third place, while Samantha Ardy (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had the best beam score for the Black and Gold at 8.875 to take sixth place.

“Individually, Leah Heilig had a great day, setting career highs on vault and floor,” DeGrood said. “Vault as a whole was great. Veronica Vasina was back in the line up and did well. Amanda Malo was solid on vault and floor.”

The Gusties return to the gym next Sunday, Feb. 18 in Towson, Md. to face Towson and Southern Connecticut in a triangular.
