ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set to continue Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Gus Young Court Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff versus Concordia College. The Gusties (6-5, 4-2 MIAC) and the Cobbers (3-7, 1-4 MIAC) are both looking to snap losing skids.

The Series

Saturday’s game marks the 181st meeting between Gustavus and Concordia on the hardwood, with the Gusties holding a 114-66 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams split the season series last year, with Gustavus winning 92-75 at Gus Young Court prior to the Cobbers prevailing 75-63 in Moorhead, Minn.

Last Time Out

Gustavus had its lead dwindle in the back end of the second half, eventually falling 68-67 in a tight battle against Carleton College Wednesday evening at Gus Young Court. Gustavus shot a season-high 50 percent from three-point range, going 9-18, while shooting 44 percent (22-50) from the field. Kelsey Thomas (Sr., Wiesbaden, Germany) led the Black and Gold with 21 points, tying a season-high 8-for-10 from the field, while Riley Sharbono (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) followed with 18 points.

About the Cobbers

After claiming its first MIAC victory of the season at Macalester College on Dec. 2, 2017, Concordia has been in the losing column since, dropping four-straight, including a most recent 72-55 setback versus Saint John’s University on Wednesday. The Cobbers have gone 70-172 from beyond the arc for the second-best three-point field goal percentage in the conference at 40.7, while averaging 70.3 points per game. Guards Tommy Schyma and Collin Larson pace the Concordia offense with 11.8 and 11.0 points per game, respectively, while center Austin Heins leads the team with 5.2 rebounds per game.

  • The Gusties matched their win total from last season with the Dec. 6 victory at Augsburg.
  • The 4-0 start to conference play was the best since the 2014-15 season, in which Gustavus began MIAC action with a 5-0 start.
  • Gustavus ranks atop the conference in three-point field goal defense, limiting its opponents to a 29.8 percent mark from beyond the arc.
  • The Gusties rank second in the MIAC with 37.6 rebounds per game.
  • Kelsey Thomas leads the Gusties with 7.1 rebounds per game, ranking fifth in the MIAC.
  • Riley Sharbono leads the the MIAC with a 55-for- 65 clip from the free throw line.
  • Sharbono has scored in double figures in all but one game this season, leading the Gustie offense with 14.9 points per game.
