ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set for its 2017-18 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, hosting Saint Mary’s University. The Gusties (2-2, 0-0 MIAC) will tip off against the Cardinals (1-2, 0-0 MIAC) at 7 p.m.

The Series

Wednesday’s game marks the 174th meeting between Gustavus and Saint Mary’s on the hardwood, with the Gusties holding a 123-50 advantage in the all-time series. Last season, the Cardinals snapped a 12-game Gustavus winning streak with a 75-73 win in Winona, Minn. The Gusties then bounced back with a 68-55 victory at Gus Young Court.

Last Time Out

After struggling to find a consistent shooting stride in the home-opening 59-41 loss against Buena Vista last Wednesday, Gustavus traveled south to Pella, Iowa and returned with a 78-64 victory over Central College on Saturday. The Gusties used two double-digit scoring runs in the first half and shot a perfect 17-for-17 from the free throw line, while Riley Sharbono (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) led the Black and Gold, shooting 44.1 percent from the field for a season-high 23 points, including a 4-for-9 mark from beyond the arc and 7-for-7 clip from the free throw line, along with eight rebounds. Kelsey Thomas (Sr., Wiesbaden, Germany) and Vannis Smith (So., Cyrstal Lake, Ill.) also added 13 points each.
