ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set for its 2017-18 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, hosting Saint Mary’s University. The Gusties (2-2, 0-0 MIAC) will tip off against the Cardinals (1-2, 0-0 MIAC) at 7 p.m.
The Series
Wednesday’s game marks the 174th meeting between Gustavus and Saint Mary’s on the hardwood, with the Gusties holding a 123-50 advantage in the all-time series. Last season, the Cardinals snapped a 12-game Gustavus winning streak with a 75-73 win in Winona, Minn. The Gusties then bounced back with a 68-55 victory at Gus Young Court.
Last Time Out
After struggling to find a consistent shooting stride in the home-opening 59-41 loss against Buena Vista last Wednesday, Gustavus traveled south to Pella, Iowa and returned with a 78-64 victory over Central College on Saturday. The Gusties used two double-digit scoring runs in the first half and shot a perfect 17-for-17 from the free throw line, while Riley Sharbono (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) led the Black and Gold, shooting 44.1 percent from the field for a season-high 23 points, including a 4-for-9 mark from beyond the arc and 7-for-7 clip from the free throw line, along with eight rebounds. Kelsey Thomas (Sr., Wiesbaden, Germany) and Vannis Smith (So., Cyrstal Lake, Ill.) also added 13 points each.

Saint Mary’s comes into MIAC action with a 1-2 overall record, most recently falling 86-76 at Concorida University Chicago on Saturday. The Cardinals are tied for the lead in the conference with an average of 41.3 rebounds per game, while ranking third with 7.3 steals a game. Senior guard James Cullen leads Saint Mary’s with an average of 13.3 points per game, while Kareem Anthony-Bello leads the team with 7.7 rebounds a game.
