Men’s Soccer Hosts MIAC Semifinal Match Posted on October 31st, 2017 by

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team is set to host a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinal matchup Wednesday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field.

The No. 2 seeded Gusties host the No. 3 seeded Macalester College at 2 p.m.

Last time out

Gustavus concluded the regular season last week with a 13-5 overall record and a 7-3 after two shutout victories over Hamline University and Macalester College. On Tuesday in St. Paul, Minn., the Gusties scored at the 99th minute to claim their first overtime victory over the season with a 1-0 win over the Pipers. On Saturday, the Black and Gold took down the Scots by a score of 2-0 during senior day.

Wilson earns MIAC accolades 

Senior midfielder Alex Wilson (Ashland, Wis.) earned MIAC men’s soccer co-athlete of the week honors after recording two game-winning goals last week, helping the Gusties receive a first round bye and the No. 2 seed for the MIAC Playoffs. Wilson tallied the game-winner in Tuesday’s victory at Hamline to secure a home postseason matchup, along with a second game-winning goal versus Macalester on Saturday. The goals stood as his second and third game-winners on the season.

Gusties in the MIAC Playoffs

The MIAC Men’s Soccer Playoffs began in 2003 and since then Gustavus has made 12 appearances with a record of 11-6, including six championships. After capturing the playoff title during the 2014 season, the Gusties missed the postseason in 2015 and fell in a quarterfinal matchup against Augsburg last season. 

Gustavus Notables

  • Going down with an injury prior to the regular season finale, Arthur Parens (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) finished his season as the team’s leading scorer, ranking second in the conference with 12 goals and three assists for 27 points. 
  • Parens and Matt Gibbons (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn.) ranked within the top-five in the MIAC with 56 and 55 shots, respectively.
  • Goalkeeper Matt Bateman (Jr., Savage, Minn.) ranked second place in the conference with 66 saves. Bateman started each game in net during the regular season, compiling a 13-5-0 record with six shutouts and a 0.97 goals against average (5th/MIAC) and a .795 save percentage.
  • Gustavus scored the second most goals in the conference with 37 on the season.
  • The Gusties finished out their regular season schedule on a four-game winning streak, shutting out each of its opponents, outscoring them 10-0.

Macalester matchup information:

  • Wednesday’s matchup marks the 63rd all-time meeting between the Gusties and the Scots, with Gustavus owning a 40-15-7 series advantage. The two teams recently competed for the No. 2 MIAC Playoff seed in the regular season finale last Saturday, with Gustavus prevailing with a 2-0 victory.
  • The Gusties are 2-0 in MIAC postseason appearances against Macalester, with wins over the Scots in the 2003 and 2004 playoff titles.
  • In 13 MIAC Playoff appearances, the Scots own a 6-7 record with one Playoff Championship in 2009.
  • Macalester concluded the regular season with back-to-back losses to Saint John’s and Gustavus that dropped the Scots to the No. 3 seed for the conference playoffs.
