ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team heads back into Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action during the final week of the 2017 regular season, heading to St. Paul, Minn. Tuesday afternoon for a matchup at Hamline University.

The Pipers (10-5 overall, 5-3 MIAC) face the Gusties (11-5, 5-3 MIAC) at 3:30 p.m. at Paterson Field.

Last time out

The Gusties wrapped up their non-conference schedule last Tuesday with a 5-0 victory at Dakota Wesleyan University. Five different scorers found their way on the scoresheet for Gustavus, all coming in the second half, highlighted by a collegiate first fromWill Richards (So., Hudson, Wis.), a career-high two assist game from Kyle Monson (Jr., Verona, Wis.), as well as a goal and assist each from Matt Murakami (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Arthur Parens (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.).

Sitting in fourth place in the MIAC standings with two games to go, Gustavus has already qualified for the conference playoffs, and will look to maintain position to solidify a top-4 seed to host a playoff matchup next week.

  • Arthur Parens is the leading scorer in the MIAC with 12 goals and three assists for 27 points. 
  • Parens’ four game-winners and 55 shots both rank third best in the conference.
  • Goalkeeper Matt Bateman (Jr., Savage, Minn.) is tied for second place in the conference with 57 saves. Bateman has started all 16 games in net and notched his fourth shutout of the season last week, tying a career-high.
  • The Gusties have scored the second most goals in the conference with 34 on the season.

Hamline match up information:

  • Tuesday’s matchup marks just the 64th all-time meeting between the Gusties and the Pipers, with Gustavus owning a 57-2-4 series advantage. The Gusties are undefeated against Hamline during the Coach Mike Middleton era, including a 2-1 overtime victory last season.
  • The Pipers are ahead of the Gusties by one spot in the conference standings, in third place with a 6-2-1 record during MIAC play and are unbeaten during their last five conference games.
  • Hamline is currently riding a three-game winning streak, shutting out Bethel, Saint Mary’s, and Saint John’s most recently.
  • Sophomore forward Adam King leads the Piper attack with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points on the season, ranking fourth in the conference in scoring.
  • Goalkeepers Dean Isaacson and Malachy Zamacona have shared time in goal and rank among the best in the conference. In 10 starts, Isaacson owns a .818 save percentage (4th/MIAC) and a 0.98 goals against average (5th/MIAC). In six starts, Zamacona has allowed just four goals (1st/MIAC), and has recorded a .833 save percentage (3rd/MIAC) and a 0.66 goals against average (3rd/MIAC).
