ST. PETER, Minn. – Mohanad Alhouni (Sr., Tripoli, Libya) and Patrick Whaling (Jr., Manikob Sabot, Va.) will represent the Gustavus men’s tennis team at the 2017 ITA Oracle Cup, held at Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Georgia October 12-15.
As the ITA Midwest Regional singles champion, Alhouni will compete in the ITA Oracle Cup as the No. 1 seed. Alhouni captured his third consecutive singles title on Monday, Oct. 2, defeating teammate Zach Ekstein (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) 6-2, 6-0 at Swanson Tennis Center. Last year, Alhouni earned a third place finish in the Oracle Cup singles draw.
Alhouni will take part in the Division III Singles Draws, and faces Jeremy Yuan of the University Chicago at 11 a.m. (EST) on Thursday.
Joining Alhouni on the trip will be his doubles teammate, Patrick Whaling. The duo defeated Brady Anderson and Nate Ackert of Coe College 6-4, 6-4 to claim the ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Title on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Swanson Tennis Center.
As the No. 1 seed in the Division III Doubles Draws, Alhouni and Whaling will face the play-in match winner from the Northwest/Southwest region at 3:30 p.m. (EST) on Thursday.
Formerly known as the Small College Nationals, the ITA Oracle Cup has history dating back to 1986, and it is the only singles and doubles national championship event for the Division III and NAIA levels. This year, more than 8,000 players took part in a total of 60 regional tournaments to gain entry into the ITA Oracle Cup field.
