Murakami Guides Men’s Soccer To Victory At Augsburg Posted on September 30th, 2017 by

Matt Murakami led the Gusties with two goals.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team scored twice in the first period, both from Matt Murakami (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) as the Gusties claimed a 2-1 victory on Saturday at Augsburg University. 

Murakami picked up the first goal of the game at the 23:33 mark, taking a feed from Arthur Parens (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) and firing a shot from 25-yards out for his second goal of the season.

Just over 10 minutes later, Murakami and the Gusties grabbed a 2-0 lead. Off a Kyle Monson (Jr., Verona, Wis.) corner kick, the senior leader headed in his second of the game and the eventual game-winner.

The Black and Gold outshot the Auggies 10-4 in the first half, and owned a 5-2 corner kick advantage.

Augsburg got on the board in the second half as the Auggies’ leading scorer, Aidan Sim-Campos capitalized off a turnover in front at the 52nd minute. The home team outshot the Gusties and held the advantage in corner kick opportunities, but were unable to tie the game. 

Matt Bateman (Jr., Savage, Minn.) tallied three saves in goal en route to earning his seventh win of the season.

Gustavus returns to action at on Tuesday for a non-conference match at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.
