ST. PETER, Minn. – The No. 10-ranked Gustavus volleyball team is set for its 2017 home opener after beginning with the season with 13 road matches. The Gusties host Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Carleton College on Wednesday evening at Gus Young Court.

LAST TIME OUT

Prior to sweeping Hamline University in the conference opener last Wednesday, the Gusties went 4-0 over the weekend at the Nike/Eastbay Fall Classic on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Gustavus improved its record to 12-1 overall with wins over Minnesota-Morris, UW-Eau Claire, the University of Chicago, and Lakeland University. 

HOLTAN EARNS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONOR

Kate Holtan (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) was named the MIAC Volleyball Hitter of the Week, after leading the Gustavus attack at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament. In five matches, Holtan totaled 62 kills, 29 digs and 10 blocks with an attack percentage of .301. In each match, she was the kill-leader and recorded a season-high double-double of 15 kills and 12 digs against Lakeland University. For her performance, Holtan earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

IN THE POLLS

The Gusties moved up in the most recent Division III National rankings. In the AVCA Coaches Poll, Gustavus moved up from No. 14 to No. 10. Fellow MIAC opponents University of St. Thomas is ranked No. 21, along with Bethel University receiving votes. The No. 10 ranking stands as the highest in Gustavus volleyball program history.

THE SERIES

Wednesday’s contest marks the 76th all-time meeting between Gustavus and Carleton with the Gusties holding a 58-16-1 advantage over the Knights. Last season, Gustavus swept Carleton 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 at Gus Young Court.

SCOUTING CARLETON

The Knights open their conference schedule against the Gusties, owning a 3-5 overall record. Carleton most recently snapped a five-game losing streak last Friday with a sweep over the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The offense is led by Abby Loe, Lucy Stevens, and Faith Skinner – who have 80, 75, and 70 kills respectively. Lauren Pak sets up the Knight attack with 260 assists, while Katie Tritschler guides the defense with 108 digs.
