Men’s Tennis Set For NCAA Regional Match

The No. 21-ranked Gustavus men’s tennis team is set to host a National Collegiate Athletic Association second round matchup on Saturday at Swanson Tennis Center. Earning a first round bye, the Gusties will face the winner of a first round match between the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Concordia University Wisconsin.

ST. PETER, Minn. – The No. 21-ranked Gustavus men’s tennis team is set to host a National Collegiate Athletic Association second round matchup on Saturday at Swanson Tennis Center. Earning a first round bye, the Gusties will face the winner of a first round match between the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Concordia University Wisconsin.

UW-Whitewater and Concordia Wisconsin will face each other in a first round matchup on Friday, while the other half of the regional bracket features a first round matchup between Coe College and Grinnell College. The University of Chicago receives a first round bye and will face the winner of Coe and Grinnell on Saturday. The second round winners will then meet for the regional final on Sunday.

About the Gusties: 

  • The Gusties finished the regular season with a 22-8 overall record and went 9-0 during conference play to clinch their 51st Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship in program history.
  • Last weekend, Gustavus defeated Bethel and St. Thomas to claim its seventh-straight MIAC Playoff Championship, clinching an automatic bid to make its seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament and 30th all-time appearance.
  • The Gusties own an all-time NCAA Tournament record of 49-34 and have compiled two national championships in 1980 and ’82, three runner-up finishes, three third place finishes, and five fourth place finishes.
  • Mohanad Alhouni (Jr., Tripoli, Libya) leads Gustavus with a 32-5 singles record at the No. 1 position while also owning a 20-7 record with Patrick Whaling (So., Manikob Sabot, Va.) in the No. 1 doubles spot.
  • Alhouni is ranked as the No. 1 player in the ITA Division III Central Region. Alhouni/Whaling rank No. 5 in the region for doubles.
  • Alhouni and Whaling were recently selected to represent Gustavus at the NCAA Individual Championships, May 25-27. Alhouni will compete in the 32-individual singles draw, while the duo of Alhouni and Whaling will pair up in the 16-team doubles draw.
  • Yassine Derbani (Fy., Casablanca, Morocco) has won eight-straight singles matches.
  • Chase Johnson (So., Golden Valley, Minn.) swept his opponents during singles competition during the MIAC Playoffs with 6-0, 6-0 wins against Bethel and St. Thomas at the No. 5 position.
  • The Gusties last loss came against No. 5-ranked University of Chicago, losing 6-3.
    • Gustavus also defeated NCAA Regional opponents Coe (8-1), Grinnell (9-0), and UW-Whitewater (8-1) during the regular season.
