ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team has two upcoming Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheaders, facing St. Catherine University on Wednesday and Macalester College on Thursday. 

Last Time Out: The Gusties most recently swept Concordia College with two shutouts at Gustie Softball Field on Monday. In game one, Gustavus tallied 12 runs and were backed by a one-hit pitching performance from Hannah Heacox (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) in a 12-0 win. Game two was a 5-0 win in which Jena Willis (Sr., Kalispell, Mt.) and Aly Freeman (Fy., Omaha, Neb.) combined for the shutout in the pitcher’s circle.

The Series: Wednesday’s games against St. Catherine mark the 66th and 67th all-time meetings between the Gustavus and St. Kate’s softball programs, with the Gusties holding a 59-5-1 record. Last season, Gustavus swept the Wildcats at Gustie Softball Field before falling 4-2 against St. Kate’s in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs.

Thursday’s games against Macalester mark the 70th and 71st all-time meetings between the Gustavus and Macalester softball programs, with the Gusties holding a 59-9-1 record. Last season, Gustavus swept the Scots at Gustie Softball Field. 

Scouting St. Catherine: The Wildcats currently sit fourth in the MIAC standings with an 8-4 conference record while going 20-10 overall. As a team, St. Kate’s relies on its offense as the league-leader with 18 home runs while ranking third with 170 runs, 46 doubles, and 159 runs batted in. St. Catherine most recently split a doubleheader with Augsburg College last Thursday.

Jenna George leads the Wildcats at the plate as one of the top hitters in the MIAC. She is the league-leader with seven home runs and is tied for the lead with 35 RBI. George also owns a third-best .457 batting average. Krista Flugstad leads St. Kate’s in the pitcher’s circle, owning a MIAC second-best 1.08 earned run average and 14-3 record along with 91 strikeouts in 103.1 innings pitched.

Scouting Macalester: Last Friday, the Scots split a MIAC doubleheader with Saint Mary’s University in St. Paul, moving their conference record to 5-7 and their overall record to 17-13. Macalester is the league-leader with 75 stolen bases while ranking second with six triples and a 2.04 ERA.

First-year outfielder Julia Carpenter leads the Macalester offense with the MIAC-best .534 batting average, tallying 55 hits in 103 at bats. She also leads the conference with 33 stolen bases. Sophie Migacz ranks third in the MIAC with a 1.70 ERA to leads the Scots in the pitcher’s circle. She owns a 10-5 record in 107 innings pitched.

Gustavus Notes 

  • Ali Hoffman (Sr., New Prague, Minn.) posted a career performance in the Concordia doubleheader on Monday, tallying a career-high four RBI in game one and a career-high three hits in game two.
  • April 2 vs. Hamline, Hannah Heacox became the Gustavus Softball all-time strikeouts leader, passing Joyce DeWitz’s (2004-07) record of 537 K’s.
  • In game two vs. Saint Benedict on April 8, Heacox became the Gustavus Softball all-time complete games leader, passing Laura LeVander’s (1993-96) record of 55 complete games. 
  • Heacox is one shutout away from tying LeVander’s career Gustavus record of 19.
