ST. PETER, Minn. – After 18 games on the road to start the season, the Gustavus baseball team is finally at home this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders at the Gustie Baseball Field. The Gusties host UW-Superior today at 2 p.m. and then face Hamline at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Gustavus enters the weekend 11-7 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC, while UW-Superior is 2-12 overall (0-0 UMAC) and Hamline is 8-12 overall (2-2 MIAC).

Last time out: The Gusties split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Saint Mary’s, winning the first game 5-1 before losing 11-7 in the nightcap. The Gusties scored two runs in the first inning of game one, which proved to be enough for starter Brice Panning who pitched six quality innings to earn the victory. Josh Chatfield (2-4, 2R, RBI, 2B), Nolan Lepel (2-4, 2 RBI, 2B), and John DeMarais (2-4, R, 2 2B) led the team at the plate. The Cardinals scored a run in the first inning of game two and never trailed. Mitchell Nordin suffered the loss after three innings of work. John Lundquist led the team at the dish, going 3-for-5 with a run, three RBI, and a double.
Familiar foes: The Gusties and Yellowjackets have already faced each other this season as Gustavus won 10-4 on March 25 at the Tucson Invitational. The Gusties scored one run in the first inning and three more in the second and never looked back. Connor Kern went the distance on the mound, allowing four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Lundquist led the team at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run, two doubles, two RBI, and a stolen base. Brock Peterson was next in line, batting 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, a triple, and a stolen base.
Scouting the Pipers: Hamline enters the weekend after splitting a pair of MIAC doubleheaders against Augsburg and Macalester at CHS Field. The Pipers will play a non-conference doubleheader today against Minnesota-Morris. Nick Kukurich leads the team at the plate with a .386 batting average. Jacob Picht is next in line with a .329 average and a team-high 15 RBI. Alex Bauermeister has logged the most innings on the mound (27.1) and holds a 1-2 record with a 6.91 ERA. Sam Petick is the go-to pitcher out of the bullpen having made nine appearances for 18 innings and a 2.00 ERA.
