ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team has three upcoming doubleheaders Friday through Sunday, hosting the College of St. Scholastica and the College of Saint Benedict Friday and Saturday prior to heading to Macalester College on Sunday. 

Last Time Out: The Gusties most recently split a doubleheader at Augsburg College Wednesday afternoon. Gustavus won game one by a score of 3-2, led by a Hannah Heacox (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) no-hitter and a Rachel Malo (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) game-winning homer. The Series: Friday’s games against St. Scholastica mark the 18th and 19th all-time meetings between the Gustavus and St. Scholastica softball programs, with the Gusties holding a 13-4 record. The two teams last met in 2015 with Gustavus sweeping the Saints by scores of 7-3, 3-2. 

Saturday’s meetings with Saint Benedict will be the 68th and 69th between the two teams. Gustavus holds a 43-23-1 all-time record over the Blazers. A season ago, the Gusties swept Saint Ben’s by scores of 5-1 and 10-8 in St. Joseph, Minn.

Sunday’s games against Macalester will be the 70th and 71st between the two teams, the Gusties holding a 59-9-1 all-time record over the Scots. Last year, Gustavus swept Macalester by scores of  4-2 and 8-7 at Gustie Softball Field.

Scouting St. Scholastica: The Saints own an 8-10 overall record while going 2-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. St. Scholastica most recently swept its UMAC opener at North Central University on Wednesday, winning 16-0 and 32-2.

Toni Bishop leads the Saints with a .412 batting average, having 14 base hits in 34 at bats. Dakota Underwood leads the team with 13 runs batted in, along with a .324 batting average, five doubles, and one home run. Chrisi Mizera has logged 52 innings pitched to lead St. Scholastica in the circle, owning a 4-5 record, 2.42 earned run average, and seven complete games.

Scouting Saint Benedict: The Blazers sit atop the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 6-0 MIAC record and a 17-5 overall record. As a team, they lead the MIAC with a .346 batting average, 171 runs, 223 hits, 42 doubles, and 142 RBI. 

Emilie Antony is the MIAC leader with 27 RBI while Sara Wennerstrand ranks third with 24 RBI. Megan Toninato leads the team with a .437 batting average, going 31-for-71 at the plate. Kiela DeVlaeminck and Alex Smith lead the Blazers in the pitcher’s circle, each having pitched 49.2 innings and 6-1 records.

Scouting Macalester: The Scots own a 14-10 overall record while going 2-4 thus far during MIAC play. Macalester most recently split a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at Hamline University, winning 5-4 and losing 6-0. The Scots rank first in the MIAC with 62 stolen bases while the pitching staffs owns a second best ERA at 2.10.

First-year outfielder Julia Carpenter leads the Macalester offense as the conference leader with a .535 batting average, having 46 hits in 86 at bats. Carpenter also leads the league with 31 runs and 26 stolen bases. Sophie Migacz leads in the Scots in the pitcher’s circle, ranking first in the MIAC with 107 innings pitched and 19 starts in 20 appearances.

Gustavus Notes 

  • Hannah Heacox (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) pitched her third career no-hitter in game one at Augsburg Wednesday. Despite allowing two runs, neither of them were earned as the runs were scored off defensive errors.
  • Heacox leads the Gusties at the plate, owning a team-best .356 batting average with 26 hits in 73 at bats, nine doubles, and 26 runs scored.
  • Heacox and Jena Willis (Sr., Kalispell, Mt.) have combined to lead Gustavus in the circle. Heacox has pitched 79.1 innings, compiling a 7-5 record with a 2.12 ERA, 97 strikeouts (2nd/MIAC). Willis has posted a 1.57 ERA (3rd/MIAC) in 58 innings pitched, owning 7-3 record.
