KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Gustavus softball team fell by scores of 4-1 to Westminster College and 2-1 against Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday during day four of its 2017 spring trip.
Westminster 4, Gustavus 1 (Box Score)
The Gusties took an early lead in game one, but surrendered four unanswered Westminster runs as they were limited to just three base hits in their third loss of the season.
In the bottom of the first, Gustavus grabbed a 1-0 lead off an Aly Freeman (Fy., Omaha, Neb.) RBI single that scored Rachel Malo (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.).
A four run second inning in which the Gustie defense submitted six errors proved to be the difference in the 4-1 loss.
Jena Willis (Sr., Kalispell, Mt.) pitched her fourth complete game of the season. She suffered her first loss, moving her record to 5-1 despite allowing just three Westminster hits and none of the four runs being earned.
Illinois Wesleyan 2, Gustavus 1
The Titans won game two on a game-winning single in the seventh inning, posting a single in the gap to score a runner from first and walk off with a 2-1 win.
Gustavus struggled at the plate again in the second game, totaling a run off two hits.
Hannah Heacox (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) suffered the loss despite allowing just three Illinois Wesleyan base hits, moving her record to 5-3 on the season.
Emily Carlson (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) led off the fifth inning, reaching base on an error prior to coming around to score the sole Gustavus run of the game on a defensive error.
The Black and Gold concludes its spring trip with another doubleheader tomorrow. The Gusties are scheduled to face SUNY-Cortland at 9 a.m. and Washington College at 1:30 p.m.
