SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team Friday wasn’t able to complete the comeback as UW-Superior scored a pair of third period goals in a 5-3 decision. The loss drops the Gusties to 1-9-4 overall, while the Yellowjackets improve to 5-11-1.
UW-Superior jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, which included a power play goal, and looked to be headed into the first intermission with a two-goal lead, but Evan Erickson (So., Woodbury, Minn.) tallied his fifth goal of the season on a Gustavus power play, making it a one-goal difference at the break.
The Yellowjackets regained a two-goal advantage at the 7:22 mark of the second period before Gustavus answered with a pair of goals within three minutes of each other to tie the game. Erickson tallied his second goal of the game at the 10:34 mark, followed by a score off the stick of captain Sam Majka (Sr., Wayzata, Minn.) with 6:28 remaining in the period.
The score remained 3-3 into the final frame, but the home squad was able to net what proved to be the game winner on a power play goal and then added an empty net goal with time winding down to secure the victory.
UW-Superior outshot Gustavus 31-21, including 13-3 in the third period, and was 2-for-4 on the man advantage. The Yellowjackets also won the battle on the dots 34-30. Jake Bushey (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) finished the game with two assists. Chris Amsden (So., St. Peter, Minn.) suffered the loss after making 26 saves.
Gustavus concludes non-conference play at 7 p.m. tomorrow at UW-River Falls.
