ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are set to get back into action as they head to Northfield, Minn. tomorrow evening for a dual meet with Carleton College.
Coming off the Flordia training trip, the Gusties will begin the new year with their second dual meet of the season Friday. Events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Thorpe Pool.
The last competition for the Gusties was over a month ago as they participated in the Jean Freeman Invitational Dec. 2-3 on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
The men were highlighted by the performance of Tanner Sonnek (So., North Mankato, Minn.), who earned the top finish for the Gusties as he finished in second place in the 100-yard breaststroke. His time of 56.12 broke the Gustavus 100-yard breaststroke school record time of 56.69, previously set last season by himself. For his performance, Sonnek earned MIAC Athlete of the Week.
In two relay events Dec. 2, the Gustie women earned eighth and ninth place finishes. The squad of Maggie Webster (So., Apple Valley, Minn.), Kate Reilly (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), Nicole Lohman (Sr., North Mankato, Minn.) and Kennedy Holwerda (Jr., Willmar, Minn.) was eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.98). Hayley Booher (Sr., Warren, Vt.), Haley Pesik (So., Eagan, Minn.), Reilly and Webster finished ninth in the 400-yard medley with a time of 4:08.27. Booher finished 11th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.98. Reilly finished in 11th place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.69 and her time of 2:00.63 in the 200-yard freestyle was good for 14th place.
On Dec. 3, the top finish came from the team of Booher, Pesik, Reilly, and Webster in the 200-yard medley relay. They finished in 10th place with a finals time of 1:52.01. Lohman, Pesik, Webster, and Reilly also competed in the 400-yard freestyle relay and finished in 10th place with a time of 3:44.31.
