ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s basketball team defeated Buena Vista University Saturday afternoon by a score of 83-71 to remain undefeated and move to 5-0 overall on the season.
Mikayla Miller (Jr., Goodhue, Minn.) shot 12-12 from the free throw line and compiled 26 points to lead the Gusties.
The 5-0 start by Gustavus marks the best record to start the season since the 2008-09 Gusties began the season with six straight wins.
A back and forth start of the game left the score at 21-18 after one quarter of play, in favor of Gustavus. The Gusties totaled 21 points in each the first and second quarter, taking a 42-31 lead over the Beavers into halftime.
Buena Vista compiled a strong pushback in the third quarter, outscoring the Gusties 22-16 to start the second half and cutting the Gustavus lead to 58-53. The five-point lead would stand as the slimmest of the game for the Gusties as they were able to pull away in the final frame.
Three-point shooting stood out in the second half as the Gusties shot 5-9, 55.6 percent. Taylor Anderson (So., Rogers, Minn.) was three-for-three from beyond the arc and totaled 14 points to establish a new career-high.
Miranda Rice (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) led Gustavus with a season-high nine rebounds and also tallied 18 points.
The Black and Gold head into Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next week, hosting Concordia College on Wednesday, November 30.
