Women’s Hockey Continues League Play Against Augsburg

The Gustavus women’s hockey team continues Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend as they face off in a series against Augsburg College.

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team continues Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend as they face off in a series against Augsburg College.

The Gusties (1-2-1, 0-1-1 MIAC) host the Auggies (5-1, 2-0 MIAC) at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn. at 7 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, Augsburg hosts Gustavus in Minneapolis, Minn. at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out: Last weekend, Gustavus tied and lost against the No. 10 ranked University of St. Thomas. Friday night in Mendota Heights, Minn., the Gusties and Tommies skated to a 2-2 overtime draw. First-year goaltender Bailey Jackson posted 41 saves, the most by a Gustie goalie since 1998. On Saturday, St. Thomas downed the Gusties by a score of 3-2 as Gustavus received goals from Kaitlyn Klein and Allie Stanger.

Series Snapshot: Friday’s game marks the 42nd all-time meeting between the Gusties and the Auggies. Gustavus owns a 32-8-1 record over Augsburg and is 9-0-1 against the Auggies over the last five seasons. Last season, the Gusties tied and won against the Auggies.

About the Auggies: Augsburg is rolling on a five-game winning-streak after dropping its season opener. Last weekend, the Auggies swept St. Catherine University with 2-1 victories each night. Senior forward Callen Naasz leads the Auggies in scoring with two goals and two assists, while first-year forward Mikayla Jones is the leading goal scorer with three on the season. Junior goaltender Rebecca Sonnek has started four of five games and owns a 1.08 goals against average.

First-years Featured: Through the first four games of the season, a third of the Gusties’ scoring has come from the freshman class. Kristen Cash, Taylor Nelson, and Ameilia Vosen have all tallied their first goals in black and gold. Cash and Vosen also are tied for second in Gustavus scoring with a goal and assist each. Additionally, goaltender Bailey Jackson has started two games in goal. In her collegiate debut, she notched the most saves by a Gustie since 1998 as she she tallied 41 saves in an overime draw at St. Thomas.

Gustavus Notables:

– Emily Gustafson leads the Gusties in scoring with three points from two goals and an assist. Kaitlyn Klein has also recorded two goals, both on the power play and leads Gustavus with 14 shots on goal.

– The Gusties are ranked third among conference opponents in power play and penalty kill categories. Gustavus is 4-15 on the power play, good for a 26.7 percent mark while they allowed just one goal on the kill in 12 opponent chances.

– Gustavus has recorded the least amount of team penalty minutes in the MIAC with 28 minutes off 14 penalties.
