Volleyball Splits Pair Of Three-Set Matches At UW-Eau Claire Tourney

The Gustavus volleyball team concluded play at the Sandy Schumacher Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, splitting a pair of matches to finish the weekend 2-2. The Gusties shut out the University of Minnesota-Morris 31-29, 25-19, 25-23 before falling to No. 24-ranked Northwestern-St. Paul 25-20, 27-25, 25-22, moving to 17-6 overall.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Gustavus volleyball team concluded play at the Sandy Schumacher Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, splitting a pair of matches to finish the weekend 2-2. The Gusties shut out the University of Minnesota-Morris 31-29, 25-19, 25-23 before falling to No. 24-ranked Northwestern-St. Paul 25-20, 27-25, 25-22, moving to 17-6 overall.

“Great competition and we were challenged all weekend,” Head Coach Rachelle Sherden said. “It was very good for us at this point in season. We grew as a team and have a few small things to work on in practice next week so we can keep progressing and playing to our potential.”

Lauren Hanson (So., Redwood Falls, Minn.) led the attack against UM-Morris with 13 kills. Nora Holtan (So., Rochester, Minn.) tallied 29 assists, and Brittany Luethmers (So., Prior Lake, Minn.) added 17 digs. The Gusties attacked at a .208 percentage, compared to .133 by the Cougars. Gustavus also out-blocked UM-Morris 9-2. Sam Haugen (So., Becker, Minn.) was a big presence at the net with five block assists.

Northwestern-St. Paul handed Gustavus its first shutout loss of the season in the final match of the weekend. Hanson posted eight kills, Holtan set up 24 assists, and Luethmers dug out 14 attacks to lead the Gusties. The Eagles outhit the Gusties .248-.133 and held the advantage in blocks 12-3. Play-by-play was unavailable for both matches.

Gustavus next returns to St. Peter for a three-match homestand this week. The Gusties host Buena Vista on Tuesday, Concordia on Friday, and Saint Benedict on Saturday.
