Men’s Soccer Begins MIAC Play Today Against No. 6 Macalester Posted on September 14th, 2016 by

ST. PETER, Minn. – After six non-league games to start the season, the Gustavus men’s soccer team opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at 4 p.m. today against No. 6-ranked Macalester College at the Gustie Soccer Field. The Gusties enter today’s match with a 1-5-0 overall record, while the Scots jumped from No. 20 in the national preseason poll to No. 6 in the latest poll after starting the season 4-0-1.

The Gusties are coming off a pair of one-goal losses during their trip to Maryland. Gustavus lost 1-0 to St. Mary’s (Md.) last Friday, followed by a 2-1 loss to Salisbury State on Saturday. Luke Laurich (Fy., Batavia, Ill.) scored the lone goal of the weekend, his second of the season. Anders Severson made six saves against Salisbury and five against St. Mary’s. After six games, Laurich leads the team with five points on two goals and an assist.

Macalester is coming off a pair of wins at the ACM Soccer Showcase in Lake Forest, Ill., defeating the host Foresters and Lawrence on Friday and Saturday. Senior midfielder Charlie Spurr scored a goal against Lake Forest and had a goal and an assist in the win over Lawrence. After five games, Spurr leads the Scots with six points on two goals and two assists.
