BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s golf team spent the first three days of April in Camp LeJeune, N.C., to compete in the prestigious Camp LeJeune Gold Championship, which included many of the top teams in NCAA Division III. The Gusties – and especially senior Andrew Krasaway (Hermantown, Minn.) – certainly rose to the occasion, as the Gusties finished fifth out of 13 teams, led by Krasaway’s 12th-place individual finish, as he shot 72 or better in each of the final two rounds. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Krasaway Wednesday with the first MIAC Men’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week award of the spring 2016 season.
Krasaway opened the tournament with a 4-over-par 76, but it turned out the Gustie senior was just getting warmed up. He fired a 1-over-par 71 during the second round, and closed with an impressive even-par round of 72 on the third and final day. His third-round 72 was the second-best round of the day and even more impressive on a day with awful conditions, including wind, rain and standing water. His three-day total of 219 (5-over-par) was good for a tie for 12th place in the 65-player field. Gustavus carded a score of 879 as a team (298-279-302) and finished behind only No. 1-ranked Methodist, No. 2-ranked Oglethorpe and nationally-ranked Greensboro and Virginia Wesleyan.
After the strong showing against some of the nation’s best in North Carolina, Krasaway and company return to Minnesota for the remainder of their spring schedule. The team will head to Becker, Minn., on Friday and Saturday to compete in the two-day, 36-hole, Augsburg Invitational. After that, Gustavus will host the Bobby Krig Invitational on April 17-18 in Jordan and Le Sueur, Minn.
