Gustavus enters today’s twin bill at 5-7 overall, while Martin Luther comes to town with an overall mark of 2-8.

Gustavus on March 25-30 participated in the Tucson Invitational at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz. The Gusties had a tough start to the annual spring trip, losing its first five games, but rebounded and ended on a high note with three straight victories. Those wins came over Middlebury, 10-9, Williams, 16-7, and Middlebury again, 5-3.

The first win against Middlebury came in walk-off fashion immediately after a walk-off loss to Williams in the first game of the day. Tied 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth, Logan Thomas led off the frame with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Josh Chatfield for the walk-off win.

The following day the Gusties posted their largest victory of the season in a 16-7 decision over Williams. After trailing 2-0 in the first inning, the Gusties busted out for eight runs in the second frame and controlled the game the rest of the way. The second inning was highlight by five hits, including a two-run double by Cody Christensen, two-run triple by Chatfield, and a two-run single by Brock Peterson. Sam Warner finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, two runs, and was a home run shy of the cycle.

In game two of the final day, Gustavus tallied a more conventional 5-3 win over Williams. Jacob Volness tossed eight strong innings to earn his first win of the season. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Jacob Braun earned the first save of the season as he closed out the ninth without allowing a hit.

Martin Luther enters today’s doubleheader with a 2-8 overall record after losing a single nine-inning game 11-4 to UMAC foe Bethany Lutheran yesterday. The Knights gave up four home runs on the day, including three in the seventh inning as the Vikings came from behind and put the game away.

James Hemmelman started on the mound for MLC, allowing three runs and six hits while striking out five in four innings. Travis Kretsch took the loss in relief, allowing five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings, dropping his record to 0-2 on the season.

Jason Lindemann led the MLC hitters with two runs batted in, including his first home run of the season.
