PEORIA, Ariz. – The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s golf team remained in sixth place to finish competition at the George Fox Invite being played at The Lakes Course over the weekend in Peoria, Ariz. The Gusties improved three strokes on the tournament’s second day to finish with a combined shot total of 645 (+77), but it wasn’t enough to catch fifth place Olivet College which finished with a score of 638 (+70). Host George Fox won the tourney with a score of 596 (+28).
“We saw some great things from our women this weekend,” said Coach Scott Moe. “We got out of the blocks better this weekend than we did at any tournament this last fall, so that was a great sign. The middle stretch produced a couple of obstacles, but we finished strong, which is always one of our main goals. The atmosphere at the tournament was awesome – we had Gustie supporters around every corner. It was great to visit with them and hear stories about how their kids or relatives enjoyed their time on the hill!”
Ellie Brandt (Fy., Wayzata, Minn.) improved eight strokes from her first day total to shoot a 76, which bumped her all the way up into a tie for 21st in the individual standings and good for second on the team over the course of the weekend. Jessica Nelson (So., Wayzata, Minn.) tallied the team’s best overall score, posting a 158 (+16) after scoring 79 on each day. McKenzie Swenson (So., Buffalo, Minn.) and Chloe Altmann (Sr., Olivia, Minn.) rounded out the Gustie scorers with overall totals of 162 and 165 after tallying 81 and 85 on Day Two, respectively.
“Jessica put together a very nice two rounds and Ellie played great today producing our low round of the weekend,” said Moe. “I look forward to getting back to practice and preparing for our next event. Many thanks to the Drenttel Family as well for sponsoring this event the past four years!”
The Gusties are back in action on April 1 when they head to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. for a duel meet with Flagler College.
