ST. PAUL, Minn. – After more than a month long hiatus from MIAC play, the Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team opened its 2016 conference schedule with a 1-1 tie against St. Catherine University on Friday evening at Drake Arena. The tie puts the Gusties at 3-7-4 overall, and 2-2-3 in the MIAC, while St. Catherine moves to 1-9-4 overall and 0-6-1 in the conference.

After a scoreless first period, the Gusties got on the scoreboard first when first-year Erin Moes (Hastings, Minn.) scored off an assist from senior Allison Eder-Zdechlik (Stillwater, Minn.) at the 17:27 mark of the second. The goal was Moes’ second of the season, while the assist was Eder-Zdechlik’s third.

Then, in the third period, St. Kate’s was able to find the net on a power play opportunity when Mallory Ryan scored on an assist from Morgan Tentis to tie the score at 1-1 just 49 seconds into the final 20 minutes. Despite outshooting the Wildcats 12-7 in the second period and 17-8 in the third, the Gusties managed no more scoring and the game went to overtime.

There, the Gusties held a slim advantage in shots taken at 2-1, but neither team found the net and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Through the course of the game Gustavus outshot St. Kate’s 42-21 and also controlled the faceofff column by a 36-19 count.

Amanda DiNella (Fy., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.) earned the tie between the pipes for Gustavus after making 20 total saves. Wildcat goalie Kristen Pechacek also earned a tie after making 41 saves.

The Gusties and Wildcats are back in action tomorrow for the series finale in St. Peter, Minnesota at Don Roberts Ice Rink. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
