MINNEAPOLIS – Competing against NCAA Division I, II and III competition, the Gustavus Adolphus College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team produced solid results at the 2015 Jean Freeman Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
During Friday’s men’s events, Tanner Sonnek (Fy., Mankato, Minn.) posted a season-best time of 58.79 in the 100 breaststroke to take seventh place. Sonnek also swam the 200 IM in 2:00.62 for eighth place. Benjamin Miller (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa) tallied Gustavus’s best time in the 200 backstroke at 1:59.85 for 11th place. In the 200 butterfly, Micah Bergstrom (So., Ewing, N.J.) finished in 2:02.58, while Bryce Carmichael (Jr., Stoughton, Wis.) was right behind at 2:04.01 for 13th and 14th place, respectively. Seth Berry (So., Bloomington, Minn.) completed the 200 freestyle in 1:49.65 for 11th place.
On the women’s side, Linnea Rizzo (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) took home three top-10 finishes, a fifth place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.71, another fifth place in the 400 IM with a 4:37.90, and a sixth place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a 17:49.55. Hayley Booher (Jr., Warren, Vt.) also recorded three top-10 finishes with her sixth place standing in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.51, ninth place finish in 100 breaststroke with a 58.58, and sixth place finish in the 200 IM with a 2:10.41. Kate Reilly (So., Hastings, Minn.) recorded a pair of ninth place finishes with her time of 24.13 in the 50 free, and 1:06.82 in the 100 breaststroke.
Michelle Simms (Fy., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Maggie Webster (Fy. Apple Valley, Minn.) rounded out the Gustie top-10 finishes, as Simms took home a ninth place finish in the 200 butterfly with a 2:16.7, and Webster earned a time of 1:58.65 in the 200 freestyle.
This weekend’s Jean Freeman Invite signifies the end of the 2015 portion of the Gustie swimming & diving team’s schedule. Gustavus goes on its winter training trip to Mesa, Arizona from Dec. 27 through Jan. 3 before returning to the waters of Minnesota for a dual with Carleton College in St. Peter that begins at 5 p.m. on Jan. 8.
