Following a weekend in which it faced the toughest of competition, the Gustavus Adolphus College women's hockey team remained at No. 9 in the most recent USCHO.com poll that was released Monday. The Gusties competed well, but fell to No. 2 Elmira College 2-1 and No. 1 Plattsburgh State 5-3 this past Saturday and Sunday at the Panther/Cardinal Classic in Middlebury, Vermont.
The Gustavus women's hockey team faced the nation's toughest schedule - literally - over the weekend and competed well in narrow losses against both the No. 1 and 2 ranked teams in Division III. Senior forward Allison Eder-Zdechlik (Stillwater, Minn.) was certainly up to the challenge, as she continued her scoring streak with a goal in each game against the nation's best to extend her impressive goal and point streaks. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Eder-Zdechlik Monday with the MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week award.
The Gustavus men’s basketball team used another strong second half to come away with a 97-90 victory over Buena Vista University on Sunday evening to improve to 2-1 overall. Much like the strong start to the second half in their last outing against Simpson, the Gusties started today’s second frame with a 17-2 run to take a 62-55 lead and never looked back.
Despite taking a 3-1 lead into the game's final period, the Gustavus Adolphus College women's hockey team was not able to hold off the nation's top team in Plattsburgh State University, falling 5-3 to the two-time defending national champion and current No. 1 Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Chip Kenyon ‘85 Arena. The loss drops the Gusties to 3-3-2 overall and 1-3-0 against ranked opponents, while Plattsburgh State improves to an unblemished 9-0-0 on the season.
After poor driving conditions postponed the originally scheduled game between the Gustavus men's basketball team and Buena Vista on Nov. 20, the two squads are set to face each other at 4 p.m. Sunday at Gus Young Court in St. Peter. In their last time out, the Gusties team defeated Simpson College 71-62 in the home opener last Saturday. The Gusties started the second half with the hot hand, going on a 19-6 run for their largest lead of the night at 53-33, propelling them to victory and a 1-1 start to the season. The Buena Vista men’s basketball team is coming off an 87-86 loss at Augsburg College on Wednesday night. Despite leading with 2:39 left in the game, the Beavers were unable to hold on for the win, dropping their third consecutive game to start the season 0-3.
The No. 9 Gustavus Adolphus College women's hockey team was not able to hold onto an early lead and suffered a 2-1 loss to No. 2 Elmira College on Saturday afternoon at Chip Kenyon ‘85 Arena. The loss drops the Gusties to 3-2-2 overall and 1-2-0 against ranked opponents, while the Soaring Eagles improve to 7-1-0 on the season.
